GeoGuessr

Post by MysticJhn » Mon Feb 15, 2016 12:01 pm

I've been playing this browser game called GeoGuessr.com.
No, that's not a typo, there is no second E in the word Guessr.

Anyway, it's free, simple, and addicting.
Basically they place you on a random Google maps street view.
Usually it's in the middle of nowhere, backwoods, half the time not even paved roads.
You can rotate the camera and move around the streets as in normal Google Maps
street view, you just have no idea where in the world you started.
The name of the game is to click on the map, based on clues you find wandering around, where you think you are.
It'll give you points based on how close you got to the actual spot you started.
This goes on for 5 rounds, and then you get a point total.
I haven't signed up for it, but I think you can keep track of your best games and whatnot.
You don't need to sign up to play, just click Single Player.
There's a Challenge Mode if you do sign up to challenge friends over Facebook or Google+.

Can you tell eastern European farmland from Canadian farmland?
How well do you know Cambodia from Malaysia?
Where in the entire United States are you?
Is this a country road in England or Brazil?
Which of the 7000 countries that speak Spanish is this?

It's fun and challenging and usually makes you wonder why Google even took street views of this garbage road in the middle of nowhere.
You can be literally anywhere.

It'sa good time waster.
I have neve cursed so many roads before. :D

The one time I was placed in some park for an old fort and there were literally 4 pictures to look at.
I couldn't even get to a road to leave it and had to guess where I was based on this one fort I was stuck in.
Turns out I was on one of those small islands around Antigua and Barbuda
lol, There was no way I was ever going to guess it.
No signs, just a few tourists and old cannons to look at. :P

This and nation states was my entire life in high school when I was bored and had nothing to do in class.

I think I have a screenshot somewhere when I managed to pinpoint it within 1 foot using google maps.

I think my closest so far was like 100 miles. :D
Maybe 50... something like that.

When I knew it was France was a lot easier than knowing it was Canada.
When you see signs in Russian, it's terrible.

The UK is a nice place to guess in, because it's relatively small, giving you a close guess anywhere
in that country, and them driving on the wrong side gives it away. :D
Also, the European style license plates help.
They blur them out, but it's a nice indicator it's not the US.

The first ever time I played this I got dropped in a Mexican square with a giant bust of some dude with the Freemason symbol underneath.

Are you referring to how if you type in anything into wikipedia and click the first link on each page you end up on the "philosophy" page 98% of the time?

I think it might be where you click the "Random article" link on the main page and see how fast you can get to Hitler.

You click 'random article' and you keep clicking links on those pages until you get to Hitler.

I used to do this all the time in high school.
