Wallace's Amateur Background Arena

Post by Wallaceman105 » Tue Jul 21, 2015 10:30 am

I'm changing the purpose of this thread, because I've decided that playing with Gimp is really fun. I've been playing around with making background images, and I'll be posting them here. Feel free to use them, comment on them, or give advice on improving them/making better ones.
Let's see where this goes! :D

Just build a wall of floodgates.
And make the OCG pay for it!

It's actually gonna change soon.
I decided that prime material blends in with the No. 54 behind him, so I'm probably gonna move lionheart to the front and put Galaxy Dragun in his place.

Updated it to include my name. I think I'm going to try changing the monsters a bit, Prime material and number 54 kinda blend together.

So I'm having a good bit of trouble here:
Image
I can't get the background separated. I've been trying for a while, and I watched a couple of tutorials, but I just can't get it.
Could anybody get that off for me?
Also, if somebody could finish the tip of his wing on the top it'd be awesome.

Are you using GIMP? Because I can write up a text tutorial for you if you'd like.

I am using gimp, and have tried 2 methods so far. But if you can show me another that'd be great.

Well, I know this method works:

1. Open your image
2. Click Layer->Transparency->Add Alpha Channel (if your image doesn't have one already)
3. Zoom in about 800%
4. Select the Paths Tool (keyboard shortcut "b")
5. Create a "connect the dots" around the part you want to cut out with the Paths Tool (this takes a while)
6. Make sure you click on the first dot to complete the path
7. Click Select->From Path
8. Click Select->Invert
9. Click Edit->Clear
10. Save the image as a .png if it is not already saved as one

I personally like 1600% for greater accuracy, but it does take longer.

I've tried a similar method, using the 'smartcut' tool, 'I key', and I'm running into the same problem as the other method, the wand tool-the color groups are so similar that I can't properly separate them and it always looks crappy. Maybe this will work better.

My first attempt at a background. Made a CCW gradient, embossed it, then distorted with waves, and finally threw a starburst into the center for some pizzazz.
Image
Second attempt. Same sort of thing, but with a (higher? Sharper? harder?) gradient, and I used the Sawtooth mode for ripple distortion, then embossed it.
Image
Tried to make a purple/green version...
Image
And this one looks better, although no green.
