So why is this card so popular/good? I just don't see it.

Can someone explain?

Yeah uh its made of diamonds, a woman's best friend. Hence popularity.

IF i had to actually guess though, it seem like it could be useful with the fire fists or avatars or whatever is the good ones nowadays

It can target itself. It is basically an out to a lot of things.

I need one :(
For certain decks it takes out side cards like royal decree, ect.

That. It's basically an easier-to-make suicidal Scrap Dragon. And I say easy because it needs almost no skill to get two level 4 monsters on the field.

But you still have to destroy the dire wolf if targetting itself, even though you get to destroy another card on the field. So you'd waste at least 1 xyz material on this card when you use its effect on itself.

not entirely. Scrap dragon orders you to target 1 card you control, while dire wolf orders you to target 1 beast, beast-warrior or winged beast you control. This makes scrap dragon a lot better than dire wolf as scrap dragon gives more options to slect which card you will destroy.

Making Dire Wolf and self destructing is the same exact play as making Scrap dragon and self destructing, with the same -1

It's used for pushes and getting rid of any single card when you need to

It's replaced Blackship Corn in my Extra (although I have no idea whether that's sensible or not, my generic Extra kind of sucks)

It can get the Garunix loop running in a fire king deck. A bit like Scrap dragon but so easy to summon if using rekindling especially since the level 4 monsters would be banished otherwise but due to being used as xyz materials do not count as cards so when detached/ destroyed they just go back to your graveyard awaiting another rekindling/ reborn.

With how absurd Yugioh is now, it's entirely reasonable for many decks to put 8k on the board and still have 2 level 4's leftover to use as an MST/Smashing Ground.
If the option exists I don't know why you wouldn't use it tbh.

Not to mention that there are also a lot of cards in the game that simply say "you can't play Yugioh while this exists" (the ones relevant to decks capable of making Dire Wolf are Messenger of Peace, Level Limit - Area B, and occasionally Macro Cosmos). Dire Wolf is an answer that you can access without having to draw it.
