Long ago, there were two brothers whose battle prowess were unmatched. Unfortunately, their home was threatened by a neighboring Lord. Even the powerful brothers could not fend off an army alone. Determined to save their house, they searched for the source of an old legend that promised power and greatness to those who found it. Arriving in the mountains, they found in the place of legend a fountain, filled with two liquids. There was no wall or divider to keep them separate, but nonetheless the two liquids, one a rich purple, the other a lustrous gold, remained on their own sides of the fountain. Engraved on the base was the message, ‘The Shield and the Viper are the greatest of foes, but give each other their purpose. One cannot exist without the other, so they must exist together.’ Reasoning that this meant both liquids had to be drunk, the two brothers each drank from one side of the pool. The brother Arken felt his pride grow as his new power brought his strength and speed to new heights, while the brother Penell watched flowers and grass begin to wilt in his presence. Together, the brothers returned to their town and faced the Lord’s army, crushing it with ease. Their houses raised in stature, and they remained true friends and brothers. Their sons, however, felt differently….
