Yes, you could get higher-ups involved, but they cannot do much to help in this scenario since he was being a douche (not even a court would he was being harmful, just overly aggressive). They would only have warned him, yet that doesn't usually reinforce the point so he is likely to do it in the future. Call it negative reinforcement, this doesn't stop till something directly affects the individual dramatically.

Another side effect could be if violence wasn't resorted to, like if you ran to get help or just tried to talk sense into him, that his girlfriend might not think highly of his actions. To her, she has just been effectively assaulted at that moment and if her knight in shining armour doesn't leap to the rescue, awkward questions could occur later.

So in conclusion, while I never resort to violence in ordinary circumstances, I have OHKO'ed someone for similar reasons and while I would recommend finding a better option, if you don't act in kind then chances are this person will do the same thing to someone else.

I think you should re-read my post.

The point I making over most of my post is the prevention of a future event like this. There is a difference between imminent danger and causing a social crisis to occur.

To be honest, if this kind of behavior is a regular habit of the guy, then returning the favor is the ONLY way he would ever possibly reconsider.
That said, he from the description seems to be the kind of guy who won't even bat an eye at this, and will maybe leave them alone, but will persist in his d-bagery.

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

Didn't anyone teach you guys this?

Violence often does very little to deter people like this anyway.

Depends how it's handled. I am no advocate for violence, heck you are more likely to see me dressed in a pink onesie marching on an anti-violence march, but I know this.

This type can be argued to either be affected more by violence in kind or by using other efforts, but sadly since this is all based on opinions....

No true answer can be found here so I will agree to disagree with you ^^
