starter deck advice

Post by squiddly » Sun May 05, 2013 8:28 pm

Disclaimer: total noob question...

Here's the situation: I've got a 8-year-old daughter and a 7-year-old son. I used to play D&D way back in the day. Board games are fun, so I'm starting them on that path. Not quite to D&D just yet. I thought I'd start them on a trading card game to get them into strategic thinking and gaming. Everything I've read tells me that Yugioh has a shallower learning curve and still has enough depth for us to have loads of fun.

I'm ready to go out and purchase some starter packs, but I need a little help. I'd go right out and buy a couple of XYZ Symphony Starter Packs (one for each player), but does that make sense to purchase two of these to play against each other? Should I purchase a Structure Pack just for variety? I understand the Structure Packs are more difficult and strategy-based, but I think I could probably work that pack and let the kiddos use the Starter Packs. But does that make sense or is playing a Starter against a Structure just ridiculous?

I guess my last option would be to purchase a Symphony Starter Pack and try to locate an older (Dawn of XYZ) Starter Pack.

Any advice would be welcome. Many thanks.

Seriously though, the game can get expensive. But you are an adult though, so your perspective of money is most likely different than mine

Anyways, as far as what you should actually get, starter and structure DECKS(not packs, unless you are refering to something else) are pretty good to start out with. Amazon and TrollandToad.com have pretty good prices, better than real life stores in some cases.

If you are just starting out in Yugioh, buying starter decks would be a good idea. They include lots of different card types and are pretty basic and good for beginners. Its not that structure decks are wicked complex, yugioh is a fairly simple game, but starter decks are like a nice warm up. I would not advise buying more than one of the same type of starter deck, you should probobly try to get your hands on up to one of each of the following:

Dawn of the XYZ starter deck
Xyz Symphony starter deck
the soon to come out V for Victory starter deck

Maybe after that you should get some structure decks, of whichever you like. With these it is ok to buy multiple copies of the same deck because structure decks focus on a more competitive aspect of the game, have a more solid strategy, and in my opinion end up being more fun.

If you do end up playing a structure deck vs a starter deck by the way, the structure deck will(should) demolish the starter deck.

Also, all decks should be around 10 dollars online, a bit less for starter decks.

Best booster packs to pick up at the moment are Hidden Arsenal 7: Knight of Stars, Lord of the Tachyon Galaxy and Cosmo Blazer.

There are some pretty expensive cards you can get from these packs, so you can price check them at http://www.trollandtoad.com/

EDIT: Also make sure to check the ban list, because without it, the game would have died many years ago (http://www.yugioh-card.com/en/limited/)

I wouldn't recommend buying any of the "Starter Deck: Yugi/Joey/Kaiba..." etc decks. The named starter decks are really not that great except for maybe "Starter Deck: Jaden Yuki", the rest of them are kind of outdated.

I would recommend any of the following for a first step into the game:
Super Starter: V for Victory
Starter Deck: Xyz Symphony
Starter Deck: Dawn of the Xyz
Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Duelist Toolbox
Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Starter Deck 2009
Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Starter Deck

However make sure you read up on the rules for all the different types of summon (Normal, flip, tribute, synchro, Xyz etc) but it should all be covered in the rulebook that comes with any of these decks
