It's AR though, exact same thing as Pokemon GO.
The players can't see it, and it wasn't even that well done, particularly the LP counter being on a top layer
covering up other things even though it should be behind their hands.

It's AR though
but that's what the holograms are in Yugioh.

No, they aren't.
AR isn't even a hologram.
It's a rendered digital image, just like Mario on your screen playing video games.
The only difference is that it's being rendered in front of live video.
What's being shown here is the exact same thing as Pokemon GO.
That's why it has the problem with the LP counters being displayed in front of everything
even though it's pretending it's show on the table display behind the game.
It cannot recognize there's an arm or card in the way, it's barely a step above green screen.
The actors who were playing Kaiba and... whatever that other character is cannot see them images
unless they looked at the screen, same as the audience.
If you looked at that table through your eyes instead of a monitor output, you'd just see a table.
AR is what Microsoft HoloLens does, which is why you need the goggles.
Nothing is actually there, which is why it's called AR.
Augmented Reality.
You can see things that aren't really there.

A hologram, at least as shown in the Yu-Gi-Oh anime/manga is a 3D physical light image being projected onto the air and playing field.
The players not only can see the images without special glasses or monitor, but can walk around them in a 3D space.
Later on in Yu-Gi-Oh they use an imaginary technology I believe they called solid light, where the holograms were solid.
It's nonsense junk science, but it's also an anime about card games being so popular they practically run the world. :P
What you see in the show is nearly impossible, especially in a sunny, outdoor environment.
Even if you somehow had a real duel disk that could read your cards, there's nothing to project the light onto irl.
I think you would need to be playing in a totally dark environment to do a real world hologram duel.
Something akin to playing a card game during a planetarium's laser light show.

Oddly, and sadly, the closest reality could get to what Yu-Gi-Oh does is how they play in ZeXal.
In ZeXal they wear those scouter looking devices which is presenting the cards they play in AR.
If I remember right from the little I watched, people without those devices cannot see the monsters or
displayed info, they just see the normal world.
If your duel disk was digital only and didn't use physical cards, you could do an AR duel like that.
