Ok so erm... i failed text making?

Post by ventes183 » Sat Mar 01, 2014 11:08 am

So yeah... Of every thing i know of photoshop, i failed at making a nice text to match nice backgrounds.
All i ever do with adobe is : Lightroom>photoshop>post to my fb archive
sadly with all the photos i do it never involves text so i'm in trouble for sig making
you already know that i also failed at making backgrounds (my cyber dragon sig -_-...)
so any ideas how to make text? and backgrounds?

Edit*
Spoiler:
Image
I know, its out of the sig size limit (3 times larger to be exact!)
i tend to 3x the sig b4 i finalise it to the constrains
What's hard about text?
You click the text tool, click the image, and start typing.

Style wise, I personally have as many fonts as possible to choose from.
Once I know what I want it to say, I'll highlight the words and flip through
every font until I see one that works.
I have on occassion sat on free font websites and just gone through every font they have,
stopping to download any font that strikes my fancy, downloading dozens at a time.
You never know when one you download at random might come in handy.

Oftentimes using a stroke on your text helps lift it from the image behind it.
Use colors of textthat make your words pop.
Colors that contrast the background of the image on the fill or stroke of the letters help.

As for backgrounds, it really depends on what you need.
A lot of times, you can cut and paste backgrounds from other pictures.
Need stars? Download an image of the night sky and slip that behind your characters.
If you're looking for something more abstract, scribble.
Use various paintbrushes in the colors you want and scribble on the background.
Then just play with a million different filters until it doesn't look like scribbles anymore.

If you want something like anime style action lines, just start with a flat color background.
Use the Noise filter to add monochromatic noise, which will splatter your image with a series of speckles.
Go to your Motion Blur filter and set that sucker to high.
Pick your angle and, blam, anime action background.

I'll see what I can do. Most of the text I have tends to have problems like blending in too well.
As for background, I've spent a good time looking for a cyberspace/grid from tron feel

Just Google "Tron background", find something pretty and copypasta it into Photoshop. Slap your images over the top.

Like I suggested, using a simple stroke works wonders for the problem of blending it.
Strokes or drop shadows help a lot.
If you look at the avatars I do with text, more than likely I have a stroke on it for that very reason.

For a cyberspace look, while it's not so simple to create from scratch, it's very easy to find one like that online.
Maybe start with a dark blue, almost black, and put a bunch of glowing blue lines over it in a circuitboard kind of pattern.
Change the opacity of some of the lower layers to give some depth to it.

Personally I'd just be lazy and find an image online that's already cose to what I want and maybe play with it some.
For you avatar, I made a glowing grid over a picture of space for the floor and just transformed it to give it perspective.
The side walls were just me typing a bunch of gobblty gook text and doing the same thing basically.

Drop shadows are done easily in Photoshop in the Layer Style menu.

Well one reason the text is hard to read is because it's blue on a blue/black background. Change the color, white maybe,
and outline it in a thin black. Also dim the background some and the transparency of the Nova is weird.

You'll have to do a lot more work if you want Nova to look like it's a "shadow". What's weir about it right now is
being able to see the background through it. Quick fix would be make a duplicate of the shape, fill it in with a
solid black and put it behind him so you don't see the lines through it and it's still dim.

I don't think it's good to have the words sit on the very bottom like that.
It would also be easier to read if you used a brighter stroke on the name other than black.
Try using that bright, almost white blue the monster on the right uses as the color of the stroke.
