Gotham

Post by Lithium » Mon Sep 22, 2014 12:00 pm

Anyone planning on watching the new series?

I'm actually kind of excited because it takes place during Bruce Wayne's childhood before he realizes his fate as Batman and it follows the investigation of his parents murderer which is led by Gordon. We don't ever see much of Bruce's childhood and family told before like this so I think it will be pretty neat to watch. :D

The new series starts tonight at 8/7c on Fox :3

The reason we never see Bruce's childhood is because nothing of importance
happens between the death of his parents and when he returns to Gotham
ready to start his career fighting criminals.
Except maybe his warrior training in his teens and young twenties, but this series predates that.
Bruce Wayne between the death of his parents and leaving the country to train is
nothing more than a sad, depressed youth.

That being said, I have no interest in this new series.
I don't want to see all these criminals before they were the Batman supervillians.
I don't need to see a hundred origin stories.
If you're going to start the series in early Gotham lore, it should have been
based off Batman: Year One instead.
I'd rather watch a young Batman develop his skills, make mistakes, and become the hero we all know.

This is Batman minus Batman, and that's a disappointment.
It'll do it's first season, and then people will be all, "Alright, where is Batman? I'm tired of watching Edward Nigma."

So....much....hate D:
Yet I can agree to most of it^

The only reason I'm watching it is cuz its a closer look of his childhood, it follows Gordon, and the whole thing is just related to Batman.

Basically out of every other superhero there is I'm mostly a Batman addict cuz...well....its Batman

I feel like the show would be a lot better in miniseries format, like Sherlock for example, and if it completely nixed Bruce Wayne and focused on the villains and Jim Gordon.

As it stands, Bruce will likely contribute little to nothing to the show, and the full season format will cause it to lose its appeal a lot quicker than 4-6 episodes would.

What I don't understand is why they decided to focus on Gordon.
Yes, he's important to the Batman mythos, but he's co-star to Batman.
Nobody is reading Jim Gordon comic books.

Meanwhile, our only real Batman to ever be on tv is still Adam West.
The campy, childish Batman from the 60s.
Now, we all enjoy Adam West's Batman, but Batman is overdue to
be shown on tv in a good, serious drama way.

As popular as the realistic Green Arrow is right now (although I still hate them Nerfing Black Canary),
a realistic Batman tv show would be a no brainer.
Just think of the crossovers!

Also, nobody wants to see a 14 year old Catwoman.
Part of Catwoman's allure is her, for the lack of a better word, sex appeal.
She abuses the heck out of her sensuality in the comics and animations.
You can't do the same thing with a 14 year old girl, and if you do, it's kind of creepy in a live-action show.
She's not using the skin-tight cat suit in this show.
She's wearing a hooded leather jacket with goggles and black pants.
Something any kid might have in their closet.
I just would want to see an adult Cartwoman.

Maybe you guys might have a different perspective on her since most of you are much closer to 14 than I am (I'm 32), but I need an adult Catwoman.
Can't have an adult Catwoman without an adult Batman since they are about the same age.

I'm not as far behind you as I'd wish old timer :P
I was speaking as, in general, I like the idea of a miniseries focusing on the origins of the villains much better than the idea they went with, though I didn't know about the whole 14 year old catwoman thing, I'd only seen the initial trailer were they only show glimpses of the villains.

For the most part, I agree with your points Mystic, but I still think Gotham is a decent idea in theory, they're just handling it wrong.

This is Gotham's Catwoman... or Catgirl.

Although I think she is only being referred to as Selina Kyle in the show.

Meh, as a show it probably won't be terrible and people will probably watch.
I just think it would be better to have a real Batman show.
This is a Bat-tease.

Well I'm 21 going on 22 in December, lol

But yeah, Catwoman I was a bit iffy on D:
I admire a slender sexy adult woman just like anyone else does :3

But for them to make the show, I believe a lot of changes had to be made or otherwise it wouldn't make any sense in the story :/

I understand that since Catwoman and Bruce Wayne/Batman should be about the same age.
I just think it's an odd place to put the story since there's no Batman in it in the Batman storyline.
Even worse is the impossibility of there being a Joker.
At best you can have a young Red Hood (Joker's persona prior to becomming the Joker, an identity later adopted by adult Jason Todd).

It was a creative decision to have an original angle on Gotham City, and it's more like
a crime drama done this way than a straight up superhero story, but I really want Batman.
They could have done a fresh, young Batman who's building up his World's Greatest Detective skills.
The original Batman comics usually used more of Batman's detective skills to solve crimes.
Only over time did he develop his darker, more ninja-like warrior persona.

If you really wanted to have an original Batman angle for Gotham, make him less of
a physical crime fighter and a more cerebral one.
THEN let him help out with Lt. Jim Gordon, pre-commissioner, and it can still be the crime drama they are aiming for.
Heck, I'd even allow Gordon to take more of the lead, showing his relationship with Batman more from his perspective than Bruce's.
That could lead up to a season one finale of Batman accidently creating the Joker, who would then be your main
villian of the second season.

The show as is really is nothing but a Bat-tease.
I'll guarantee they'll make 100 tongue-in-cheek references to Bruce's future as Batman, but it won't get there.
If they ever show Batman on Gotham, I guarantee it'll be at the end of some two-part series finale, and you might get a dark glimpse of the caped crusader in some 7-10 years later scenario.

Well, after watching the first episode last night, I was kind of disappointed in it, it wasn't as great as I thought it would be :(
But may just been the first episode, I'll try a couple more to see if they actually go anywhere with what they had before I make a complete decision on whether watching it or not.
